SENATE RESUMES PLENARY, FOCUSES ON TAX REFORMS AND RIVERS CRISIS RESOLUTION

Written by on May 6, 2025

The Nigerian Senate has resumed plenary after recess with a renewed commitment to addressing pressing national issues, including the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State and the passage of key economic legislation.

In a statement issued on Monday, Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele disclosed that the upper legislative chamber would collaborate with the executive to ease political tensions in Rivers and ensure lasting reconciliation among stakeholders. He stressed that national unity and stability remain paramount.

Top on the Senate’s agenda, according to Bamidele, is the consideration of the 2024 Tax Reform Bills. He explained that the proposed legislation is vital for overhauling Nigeria’s tax system and boosting government revenue, thereby enhancing development at all levels.

“The passage of the tax reforms is critical to improving the country’s revenue base and ensuring effective delivery of democracy’s dividends,” the Senate Leader stated.

The Senate also expressed concern over renewed security challenges in parts of the country, including Benue, Borno, Katsina, and Plateau States. Senator Bamidele noted that the National Assembly would deepen engagement with security agencies to formulate fresh strategies to curb insurgency and insecurity in affected regions.

Meanwhile, the Senate is expected to commence the screening of several presidential nominees, including appointees to the South-South Development Commission, following recent announcements by the Presidency during the legislative break.

Bamidele further assured that the Senate would expedite work on other critical bills affecting key sectors of the economy, adding that public input would be encouraged through scheduled committee hearings.
