The Supreme Court has overturned the decision of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had previously recognised Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
In a unanimous ruling delivered by a five-member panel, the apex court held that the Court of Appeal lacked the jurisdiction to declare Abure as chairman, having earlier determined that the core issue in the case related to the party’s internal leadership.
The Supreme Court emphasized that leadership disputes within political parties are internal matters and therefore fall outside the jurisdiction of the courts.
The court allowed the appeal filed by Senator Nenadi Usman and another party, deeming it meritorious, while dismissing a cross-appeal brought forward by Abure’s faction of the Labour Party, ruling it unmeritorious.
