SUPREME COURT REINSTATES SENATOR ANYANWU AS PDP NATIONAL SECRETARY

The Supreme Court has overturned the judgments of the Court of Appeal and Federal High Court, which had previously sacked Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

A five-member panel of the apex court ruled that the issue of party leadership falls under the internal affairs of a political party, making it non-justiciable in court.

Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Jamilu Tukur nullified the October 2024 trial court ruling and set aside the December Court of Appeal majority judgment, which had upheld Anyanwu’s removal.

Instead, the Supreme Court affirmed the minority judgment of Justice Ekanem from the appellate court, which had dismissed the trial court’s ruling for lack of jurisdiction.

Furthermore, the apex court ruled that the plaintiff, Aniagu Emmanuel, who initially filed the suit, lacked the legal standing to challenge Anyanwu’s position since he failed to demonstrate any personal interest or harm caused by the PDP’s choice of National Secretary.
