Popular media personality and reality TV star, Natacha Akide, widely known as Tacha, has sparked fresh national debate with her bold remarks urging Nigerians to reconsider the growing trend of relocating abroad in search of greener pastures — a movement popularly referred to as “japa.” In a recent interview with journalists, the outspoken influencer called on citizens, especially the youth, to remain in Nigeria and actively contribute to the country’s development rather than abandoning it for foreign lands.

Speaking candidly, Tacha emphasized that while countries like the United Kingdom offer functional systems and infrastructure, Nigeria possesses untapped potential that can be harnessed if citizens commit to building rather than fleeing. She noted that her time in London opened her eyes to the possibilities Nigeria could achieve if certain structures were uplifted and made to work. “Nigerians need to stay in Nigeria to check this country or to affect the change we want to see,” she said, adding that despite the allure of foreign cities, Nigeria remains a land of promise.

Tacha went further to challenge the popular belief that life abroad is automatically better. According to her, many Nigerians sell off their homes, cars, and thriving businesses just to relocate, only to discover that the reality overseas is far from the fantasy they imagined. “People just feel, you know, when I get to the UK, greener pastures. If you have a working business or you have a working job, you have a car, you have your house, it doesn’t make sense for you to sell those properties and say, you know what, I want to go abroad,” she said, referencing common migration destinations like South Africa, London, and Dubai.

She also highlighted the emotional toll of relocating, pointing out that loneliness, cultural shock, and the hustle abroad often outweigh the comfort many already enjoy at home. “It’s not greener outside Nigeria than we all think it is. Even when you get in there, you still have to walk, like walk to the level you want yourself to be in,” she added, stressing that the journey to success abroad is often longer and more difficult than portrayed on social media.

Tacha’s comments come at a time when thousands of Nigerians are seeking opportunities in foreign countries, driven by economic hardship, insecurity, and the desire for a better life. However, her message is clear: the real solution lies in staying, speaking up, and actively participating in the nation’s progress. She concluded by reaffirming her love for Lagos and her belief in Nigeria’s potential, saying, “I love Lagos, Nigeria.”

Her remarks have since gone viral, drawing mixed reactions from Nigerians across social media platforms. While some praised her for promoting patriotism and national development, others questioned the practicality of her advice given the current state of the country. Nonetheless, Tacha’s voice adds to the growing chorus of influential Nigerians calling for a shift in mindset — from escape to engagement, from despair to determination.
