The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, on Tuesday, swore in three newly elected lawmakers following their victories in the August 16, 2025 bye–elections.
The lawmakers were elected to fill vacant seats in the House created by the deaths of four members and the nomination of Dennis Idahosa as the deputy governorship candidate in the 2024 Edo State election.
The House had lost four members between 2024 and 2025 due to illness:
Ekene Adams (Kaduna)
Isa Dogonyaro (Jigawa)
Olaide Akinremi (Oyo)
Oriyomi Onanuga (2025)
To fill these vacancies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted bye-elections in August 2025 across the affected constituencies.
Of the five available seats, the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured four, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won one.
The three lawmakers sworn in on Tuesday are:
Omosede Igbinedion – Ovia South/Ovia West/Ovia North-East Federal Constituency, Edo State
Joseph Bagudu – Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Kaduna State
Mukhtar Rabiu – Garki/Babura Federal Constituency, Jigawa State
However, Elegbeji Ayola (Sagamu/Ikenne/Remo North Federal Constituency, Ogun State) and Oyekunle Sunday (Ibadan North, Oyo State) were absent at the swearing-in. No official reason was given for their absence.
Notably, Oyekunle Sunday is the only one among the five newly elected members affiliated with the PDP.
