Tinubu Addresses Nigeria on Democracy Day

President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the country will not slide into a one-party state under his leadership.

Speaking at the National Assembly, where address a joint session of the lawmakers as part of the activities lineup to celebrate Nigeria’s 26 years of democracy, he stressed the importance of a competitive democracy with space for diverse voices. He, however, maintained that the All Progressives Congress (APC) must remain open to new members, including those from other political parties, noting that shutting its doors would amount to political malpractice.

“To those who ring the alarm that the APC is intent on a one-party state,
I offer you a most personal promise. While your alarm may be as a result of
your panic, it rings in error.

“At no time in the past, nor any instance in the present, and at no future juncture shall I view the notion of a one-party state as good for Nigeria. I have never attempted to alter any political party registration with INEC. Equally, my friends, we cannot blame anybody seeking to bail out of a sinking ship even without a life jacket.”

Taking a swipe at opposition parties battling internal crises, the President noted that defections are not his responsibility, and it is up to the affected parties to put their house in order.
