President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new national headquarters for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a stronger electoral system and deepening Nigeria’s democracy.
He described the new INEC complex as a vital step toward achieving institutional excellence, noting that it would serve as a hub for innovation, training, planning, and transparency in electoral administration.
According to the president, Nigeria’s democracy is evolving, and there is a need for its institutions to grow in strength, capacity, and integrity.
He pledged his government’s continued support for INEC, not only in terms of infrastructure but also in providing the necessary legal backing, policy direction, and resources to enable the commission to carry out its constitutional duties effectively.
President Tinubu commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for initiating the project, describing it as a crucial move to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic values. He also lauded the FCT Administration and INEC staff for their commitment and resilience in upholding democratic processes.
Addressing contractors and project stakeholders, the president emphasised the importance of quality, speed, and integrity in the execution of the project, urging all parties involved to carry out their duties with transparency and accountability.
He noted that the building goes beyond bricks and mortar, saying, “You are not just constructing an edifice; you are building public trust in our democratic journey.”
President Tinubu concluded his remarks by calling on Nigerians to support efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, safeguarding civil liberties, and securing the nation’s future.
