President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the crash of Air India Flight AI171, which occurred near Ahmedabad on Thursday, claiming numerous lives.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu extended condolences to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government and people of India, describing the incident as a tragedy that unites humanity in grief.

“The tragedy of Air India reminds us, once again, of the fragility of life and the common bond of humanity that holds us together,” Tinubu said.

The ill-fated London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying two pilots, 10 crew members, 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian, crashed around 1:00 pm local time. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport has been closed indefinitely.

President Tinubu offered prayers for the souls of the departed, the injured, and grieving families, saying:

“At this moment of sorrow and pain, Nigeria stands in solidarity with our friend, brother, and partner, Narendra Modi, and the people of India.”

He also extended sympathies to the leaders and citizens of Britain, Portugal, and Canada, who lost nationals in the disaster.

Commending the swift emergency response of Indian authorities, the president expressed confidence in their ability to manage the aftermath with professionalism and compassion.

“Nigeria also deeply sympathises with the families and friends of other victims on board the aircraft,” he added.

President Tinubu concluded by praying for divine comfort for the bereaved and for peace for the souls of the deceased.
