It was a somber Easter celebration turned tragic in Billiri, Gombe State, as a trailer transporting goods plowed into a religious procession along the Gombe–Yola Federal Highway on Monday.

Authorities confirmed that the accident claimed five lives—two men and three women—while several others sustained injuries.

Reacting swiftly, Gombe State Governor, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya directed a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. However, the tragedy sparked unrest, as enraged youths took to the streets in protest.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the trailer involved in the crash was set ablaze by an angry crowd, who also demanded the release of the driver from police custody. The situation quickly escalated into clashes between protesters and law enforcement, leading to looting and destruction of property.

Police officers intervened, restoring calm to the affected areas.

Governor Yahaya, in a statement issued Monday, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the bereaved families and the Christian community in Billiri. He pledged that the government would ensure justice while urging collective healing.

“This is a painful moment for the families affected and for all of us,” he stated. “We will ensure that victims receive the best possible medical care, and as a people, we will overcome this tragedy united.”

The governor also mandated a full inquiry into the accident and assured that those responsible would be held accountable.

Meanwhile, security agencies have commenced investigations to establish both the immediate and underlying causes of the tragic event. Residents have been urged to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.

Speaking on the incident, Commissioner of Police Bello Yahaya conveyed condolences to the affected families, wishing the injured a swift recovery. He reassured the public that security measures have been intensified to prevent further unrest.

Authorities have cautioned citizens against taking the law into their hands, advising them to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.

This devastating incident adds to past tragedies during religious processions. In December 2024, a Sharon vehicle struck a Christmas march, resulting in fatalities. Similarly, in 2019, members of the Boys Brigade lost their lives after being hit by a vehicle during an Easter procession.

These recurring mishaps have intensified calls for stronger safety measures during religious events, as well as stricter traffic regulations during festive seasons.
