White smoke has just risen from the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel, signalling that the College of Cardinals has successfully elected a new pope to succeed the late Pope Francis.

Thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square erupted in cheers at the sight of the smoke, with some jumping, praying, and embracing in emotional celebration. Church bells are pealing loudly, echoing through the Vatican and amplifying the joy of the moment.

A couple from Greece, overwhelmed with emotion, described the moment as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience”, saying they plan to remain in the square until the identity of the new pontiff is revealed.

Though the name of the newly elected pope has not yet been announced, the world’s eyes now turn to the central balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, where he is expected to emerge within the hour and deliver his first blessing, Urbi et Orbi.
